Data Security and Protection Toolkit

Also known as: data security and protection toolkit

An annual online self-assessment published by NHS England that organisations complete to show they meet the National Data Guardian's data security standards.

The Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT) is an online self-assessment published by NHS England. Organisations that handle NHS patient data or connect to NHS systems complete it each year to demonstrate they meet the ten data security standards set out by the National Data Guardian.

For adult social care, completing at least the entry level supports safe information sharing with the NHS and is expected for access to certain NHS services and data flows.

Why it matters for care homes

A current DSPT submission is increasingly a condition of sharing information with the NHS and of some funding routes. It is also strong evidence of good data governance for the Well-led key question.
