Electronic Medication Administration Record
Also known as: electronic MAR, eMAR system
A digital version of the medication administration record, replacing the paper MAR chart with an on-screen record of every dose given, refused, or missed.
An eMAR (electronic Medication Administration Record) is the digital equivalent of the paper MAR chart. Care staff record each medicine as it is administered, along with refusals, omissions, and the reason, directly on a device at the point of care.
Because the record is electronic, an eMAR can prompt staff when a dose is due, flag a missed or late administration, hold a separate protocol for each as-required medicine, and keep a complete, time-stamped history for audit.
Why it matters for care homes
Medicines management is one of the areas the Care Quality Commission scrutinises most closely under the Safe key question. A clear, complete medication record is central to evidencing safe administration.
