The independent regulator of health and adult social care in England, which registers, monitors, inspects, and rates services including care homes.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and adult social care in England. Care homes must be registered with the CQC to operate, and the CQC monitors and inspects them against its standards.
Following an assessment, the CQC gives a service one of four ratings: Outstanding, Good, Requires improvement, or Inadequate. Ratings are published and must be displayed by the provider.
Why it matters for care homes
CQC registration and rating shape a care home's reputation, its ability to accept publicly funded placements, and, in serious cases, its right to operate. Inspection readiness is a constant operational priority.
